Malagasy People have accepted Constitutional Amendments

On the 4th of April, the Malagasy People have cast their vote to pronounce themselves on amendments to their Constitution, proposed by the government lead by President Marc Ravalomana. According to the results confirmed by the High Constitutional Court (HCC), 75,38% of the voters have said "Yes" to the amendments.

The President of the Republic, Marc Ravalomanana, sees this constitutional reform as a necessity, in such a way as it will smooth the implementation of the Madagascar Action Plan (MAP), which is the government's Development Plan for the next five (5) years (2007-2012).

The "Yes" to the constitutional amendments by the Malagasy People is therefore viewed by the President of the Repulblic as their support to his Development Plan, hence the government feeling of being even more empowed for the implementation thereof.

In proposing the said reform to the constitution, the government has had as a key development objective the reinforcement of territorial decentralisation, giving more power to the local administration. From six (6) Provinces, the territory of Madagascar will be now divided into twenty two (22) decentalised Regions.
