Tourism

The tourism sector is quite well structured because of several existing associations, which are organized by function and national scope. Tourism in Madagascar specializes more and more on niche markets based on its natural resources. Madagascar is a key destination, thanks to the endemic fauna and flora (respectively 80 and 90%), 70% of the lemurs species in the world, 1.000 of orchids species, 46 classified sites, its other tourist attractions are resort sites (thanks to its 5 000 km of coast with many beaches and bays) and the diverse culture of its population.

Tourism indicators show a constant growth over the years and Madagascar will benefit for being remote from international political and health burdens (terrorism and SARS)
For the high season for this year 2003, 9 flights are scheduled weekly to Europe, 3 on the national airline company AIR MAD, 4 with AIR FRANCE and 2 with CORSAIR.

   Madagascar has:

- 5 national parks: Montagne d'ambre, Isalo, Mantadia, Ranomafana, Mananara nord
- Special reserves of which the main ones are: Andasibe, Bezaha mahafaly, Ankarana, Sainte Marie, Nosy Mangabe
- 11 integral natural reserves
- 70% of the world's lemur species
- 1000 species of orchids
- 146 classified monuments and sites, 27 restored
- 125 unclassified sites and monuments
- 23 special reserves for the protection of animal and plant species
- 6 hunting reserves and 2 private reserves
- A high endemic rate for batrachians, reptiles and butterfly species
- An extra ordinary wealth of crafts
- A botanical treasure of dry spiny deserts

   Sector potentialities and opportunities

Without any doubts, Madagascar possesses the most exceptional fauna and flora of this part of the world when one considers the incredible number of endemic species - 80% for the fauna and 90% for the flora. This fact, combined with a unique climatic diversity, gives country an exceptional tourism potential. The number of visitors is estimated at 150,000 per year, but this only represents one tenth of the total number of visitors of the south western part of the Indian Ocean.

Madagascar has around 5,000 kilometres of coastlines, a part of which is protected by coral reefs with rich aquatic fauna, to the delight of divers and ordinary swimmers. Inland, the diversity in climates, cultures and landscapes, combined with an exceptional bio-diversity, make Madagascar a unique destination: island-continent, it provides the eager traveller with wide open spaces with great opportunities for adventure and discovery. Referred to as nature sanctuary, Madagascar is a paradise for botanists, paleontologists and primatologists.

The seaside tourist resorts will also soon be launched on the market. At this day, Madagascar's capacity to receive tourists is still not enough; the coming of new investors will give the possibility to increase the attraction to the destination.
